Classical Definition
A physiological sensation of sudden cold accompanied by shivering or goosebumps (piloerection), triggered by activation of the sympathetic nervous system in response to cold, fever, or intense emotional stimulation. The sensation results from contraction of arrector pili muscles and redistribution of blood flow.
