BODY sensation

Low

A drop in energy with no story behind it. Not sadness — the body simply turning inward.

Classical Definition

A temporary state of reduced energy, motivation, and outward engagement. Distinct from sadness — which has an object — and from depression, which is persistent and clinical. Low is a natural fluctuation in vitality: the body's rhythm of inwardness before the energy returns.

The Spiritual Perspective

You wake up and something is different. Not wrong — just lower. Less pull toward the day. Less energy at the edges. The body feels quieter than usual, and not in a peaceful way.

This is Low.

Low is a feeling, not an emotion. It carries no story in itself — no cause, no accusation, no demand. The body is simply gathering inward before the energy returns. Something wants to settle. Something wants to be experienced before it moves on.

The mind does not see it this way. The mind needs a reason. Within minutes it begins searching — yesterday's conversation, something coming up, a situation that hasn't resolved. And the moment it finds a candidate, Low attaches to it. What was a body state becomes a story. The story becomes the mood. The mood becomes the day.

But Low without the story does its own thing. A few hours of quieter energy. Less engagement with the outside. More inwardness. And then — sometimes by afternoon, sometimes the next morning — the vitality returns. Not because anything was fixed. Because nothing was interrupted.

How It Unfolds

The mechanism is simple. Low arrives. The mind searches for why. The search is the problem — not Low itself.

Think about laughter. If you laugh at a joke completely — really laugh, let the whole thing land — you can never laugh at it the same way again. The experience completed itself. Nothing was left over.

Feelings work the same way. When Low is met without interference, it moves through. When the mind interrupts it with a story, the story extends what would otherwise pass. You are no longer experiencing Low — you are experiencing Low plus the explanation for Low, plus the fear that it means something, plus the resistance to it still being here.

That stack is what turns a few hours into a few days.

The Cover Story

“Something must be wrong.”

What it actually hides: A natural body rhythm that needed only space and time to complete itself.

The mind cannot hold a state without a cause, so it searches until it finds one — a relationship, a failure, a situation that could explain the feeling. The low feeling attaches to it. What was passing weather becomes evidence. What was a few hours becomes a story that lasts for days.

What the Traditions Say

A joke, fully laughed at, loses its charge entirely — you will never laugh at it the same way again because you have experienced it completely. A feeling works the same way. Met without resistance or interpretation, it completes its cycle and releases. Low is not asking to be understood. It is asking to be experienced.

— Avi Itzkovitch, Conscious Relationships

Discomfort becomes suffering mainly through three movements: resisting it, explaining it, and solidifying it into identity. What Chödrön calls "staying with the raw energy" is the willingness to feel the texture of the experience directly — before the mind converts it into a verdict. Low, approached this way, is simply energy moving through. Not a problem. Not a story. Just weather.

— Pema Chödrön, When Things Fall Apart

The first arrow is the low feeling. The second arrow is what the mind does with it: the resistance, the self-judgment, the narrative, the fear that it will not pass. The first arrow cannot always be avoided. The second arrow is always optional.

Awareness

The question is not: why am I feeling this?

The question is: can I let it be here without explaining it?

Low is not a verdict about your life. It is not evidence that something is wrong. It is weather moving through the body — and like all weather, it moves when not interrupted.

The moment Low becomes "I am low because..." something has been added that was not there. And stories, once started, have a way of continuing indefinitely. The low feeling was not asking for a story. It was asking for a little space.
