Classical Definition
A physiological and psychological state of reduced arousal, muscle tension, and sympathetic nervous system activity, typically accompanied by a sense of rest and ease. The relaxation response (Benson) involves parasympathetic activation, slowing heart rate, lowering blood pressure, and reducing cortisol.
