Classical Definition
A physiological drive state arising from intracellular or extravascular dehydration, mediated by osmoreceptors in the hypothalamus and characterized by dry mouth, reduced saliva, and urgent motivation to consume fluids. It is regulated by antidiuretic hormone (ADH) and the renin-angiotensin system.
