Classical Definition
A state in which the level of environmental or cognitive stimulation falls below an individual's optimal arousal threshold, resulting in boredom, inattention, and restless seeking of greater stimulation. It reflects a mismatch between available input and the nervous system's homeostatic arousal needs.
